Under the Microscope with Kindergarteners | VIDEO

March 18, 2022

Kindergarteners’ eyes are open to a whole new, microscopic world. The students learned how to use a microscope in the STEMzone’s Makerspace. For many of them, it was the first time they’d ever peered into one. Please watch the video below to see and hear from them about their experiences as they were in action.

The microscope lesson occurred as Kindergarten starts a new unit about homes. This provides opportunities to incorporate rich and meaningful experiences to explore materials. According to Ms Shanthi, “The children will engage in conversations about the transformability and multiplicity of paper and clay, while we make natural connections to our new learning about homes and home designs.”

Their first engagement was to look into the secret of paper. Mr Wayne showed the learners how to use a microscope to zoom in and view a familiar material, paper, in a different way. Along the way, the class also looked at sand, a strand of hair and even a peacock feather! “The microscope as a tool has opened up a whole new way of looking at everyday objects and materials with fresh eyes!” Ms Shanthi exclaimed.
